Introduction to Film

The objective of this class is to help students become more active, intelligent film viewers.

Students will learn to go beyond evaluative definitions of whether or not you liked a film, but rather see film as an art form, worthy of careful study, analysis, and reflection. Films can be more than just entertaining, they can be meaningful experiences and thoughtful messages. Throughout the semester I hope you can continually ask yourself, ‘What is the filmmaker saying about the world, or people, or art?’ ‘How is this film viewing experience changing me?’ ‘What did I gain from this work?’

“We want you to engage; we want you to receive films based on what they are, not based on what you want them to be.”
